Mertens Water Monitor
The Mertens Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi)
The Mertens’ Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi) is a unique and semi-aquatic Australian goanna known for its sleek build, swimming ability, and inquisitive nature. Native to northern Australia, this species thrives in environments that offer both land and water access.
Our captive bred Mertens’ Monitors are raised in optimal conditions and make an incredible display reptile for experienced keepers. With their striking banded tails, alert behaviour, and affinity for water, they are one of the most fascinating monitors available in Australia.
Their nostrils are also on the top of their head, like a crocodiles, so that they can stay partially submerged in the water when searching for prey. These big reptiles grow to a metre long and weigh up to 380 grams.
These active monitors require a large, secure enclosure with a warm basking area, UVB lighting, and access to a clean water feature for swimming and soaking. A varied carnivorous diet including insects, fish, and occasional rodents supports healthy growth and behaviour.
Amazing Amazon’s expert staff can guide you through enclosure setup, diet planning, and long-term care to ensure the best possible outcome for you and your reptile.
