Mary River Turtles

Baby Terrapins have never been legal in Australia and were mostly Shortneck Turtles,Longneck Turtles and Mary River Turtles that were just referred to as Terrapins.Penny turtles for sale is another phrase used and there is no such thing as a Penny Turtle. 

Do you have Baby Tortoises for sale and although the wildlife schedule in Victoria states some species as Tortoise,call Australian species are Turtles. The Mary River Turtle (Elusor macrurus)was only described by scientists in 1994 from the Mary River in the hinterland north of the Brisbane region.

The Mary River Turtle species were sold in pet shops in the 80's as ‘penny turtles’. It was through these that the species came to the attention of Sydney turtle researcher John Cann. It took John more than 20 years to trace the baby turtles to the Mary River. Mary river turtles are recognized as one of the most threatened species of freshwater turtle in Australia. 

AFTCRA Inc. is undertaking conservation work with this species and has so far released over 200 captive bred individuals into the wild Turtles require a solid commitment, because they can live 30 years+, require a very specific living environment which includes UVB lighting, heating, water conditioning and correct diet.

A BASIC WILDLIFE LICENSE IS REQUIRED TO KEEP THIS SPECIES IN VICTORIA
